Extensive areas of rural landscape abound. There's a wide variety of open arable land, broadleaved woodland, parkland, river valleys, marsh and heathland with miles of canals, historic railways rivers and reservoirs. The region is home to the UK's largest wetland, the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads and other open water locations.
The Ashridge Estate
The Ashridge Estate is 5,000 acres of woodland, open countryside and chalk downland providing panoramic views over the Chilterns. There are historic woodland carriageways and flint tracks with very accessile locations and limited modern structures.

Dunstable Downs
This local beauty spot offers outstanding views over the Vale of Aylesbury and Chiltern Ridge. It is the highest point in the East of England and is owned by the National Trust. The visitor centre is owned by Bedfordshire County Council but managed by the National Trust.
The Fens
The Fens are unique with an atmosphere and character all of their own. This fascinating area with its big skies, special history and unique heritage, offers a landscape with a real difference. The Fens stretch from Cambridge to Lincoln and from King’s Lynn to Peterborough – nearly 1 million acres of beautiful black soil and wildlife-rich water. The Fens of today are a people-made landscape, as full of history and heritage as they are of flowers, horticulture, water and wildlife.
Dedham Vale
The Essex countryside is characterised by open spaces and big ever changing skies and The Dedham Vale and Stour Valley embraces one of Essex's most cherished landscapes. Picturesque villages, rolling farmland, rivers, meadows and ancient woodlands combine to create traditional English lowland landscape.
