Digital Shorts is a UK wide scheme to find and develop new and upcoming filmmaking talent and enable them to make innovative short films using digital technology. The scheme teams the UK Film Council’s New Cinema Fund with regional partners across the UK. Screen East has produced over 40 films as part of the scheme since it was set up in 2001.
The scheme allows filmmakers to make short films in a professional environment with training and guidelance from industry experts.
The films are Executive Produced by Sam Burton for Screen East and Julia Caithness for the UK Film Council.

Screen East’s Digital Shorts filmmakers go on to do a variety of things once they have made a short film with us. Jon Dunleavy, who made the animation The Technical Hitch in 2005 has made more shorts, has an agent and is developing several television projects, and Emily Blickem, a producer from the 2007 scheme has gone on to work on feature films. Many of our directors and writers are now working within the industry. Digital Shorts is a great way to demonstrate your talent and get yourself noticed!
We look for new and innovative films that experiment with digital filmmaking techniques, films that have a fresh approach to structure, style, and production techniques. We look for great cinematic stories that will capture the imagination of an audience and look great on a big screen.
The Digital Shorts Scheme 09/10 is now closed for applications. To keep up to date on what's happening with the scheme, please read the Digital Shorts blog!
The 2008/9 films are now finished and will be starting a festival circuit in 2010 watch this space to see how the films get on!
